Custom Center Console

I wanted to have a center console to store CD's and sunglasses, and have a place to put a drink. Instead of buying a pre-made one, I decided to build one myself. It took less than a day to build the wood frame, then I had it upholstered in the same vinyl that was used on the front and rear seats. Follow along as I describe how to build one:

1) Rough measurements were taken in the car to get the overall dimensions. I used 3/8" plywood and cut the sides, back and top surfaces.

2) Test fitting the console in the car.

3) After the frame is screwed together, I used Bondo to get a curved surface below the power window switches, and also used Bondo to fill any gaps so they don't show through the vinyl. A hinged lid is added to the top. Next, it was time to cut holes for the cupholders. I looked everywhere for cupholders, and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. So I made my own using subwoofer ports. I used 2 7/8" x 3" ports, and epoxied some black plastic across the bottom. They are just a press fit into the hole, with the vinyl keeping them snug.

4) I took the console to the upholstery class that did the front and rear seats. They used 1/4" foam on all of the sides, and 1" closed cell foam for the arm rest. They made the shifter boot from the same vinyl.

5) After it was upholstered, I cut an X in the vinyl for the power window switches, and slid them into place. The switches were momentary on - off - momentary on rocker switches from a local electronics store. Here's the final product in the car:
