Custom Amp Rack

Building my amp rack was pretty easy, and quite enjoyable. I wanted the amps to sit in the recessed area above the gas tank, and have a false floor with a plexiglass window over the amps. I used 3/4" MDF for the base, and 1/2" plywood for the false floor. The pictures below describe how I built it.

I started by cutting out a base that sat right on top of the gas tank. I had to notch it for the fuel filler tube. I then mounted some sides to the panel using 2" wood screws countersunk from the bottom. The sides were tall enough to support the false floor that would completely cover the trunk.
After the sides were in place, I added a front and back panel. Then I was able to mount the base to the trunk. I used about a dozen screws around the perimeter that go through the gas tank mounting flange. This photo shows the partially complete sub boxes and amp sitting on the base.
The rack was then carpeted with charcoal colored carpet, and the RCA cables were installed. The amps are mounted to the rack using security screws, that require a special key to remove.
The false floor and battery cover was then cut from plywood and carpeted.
The center of the hinged panel over the amps was cut out.
I used 1/8" wood to create the jagged edges that cover the empty space around the amps. This picture shows what it looks like before it was carpeted. After carpeting this panel, a 1/4" piece of plexiglass is installed underneath the cutouts.

I also made some carpeted rectangles that fill these cutouts and cover the plexiglass, for the times when I need to carry items in the trunk that would scratch the plexiglass.

After installing the amp cover, I mounted a Mustang script emblem to the battery cover to dress it up.
