Stealth Stereo
| A cobra isn't the best vehicle for a stereo, but I had to install
one. I decided to use pretty low end equipment, as there's a chance
it'll get wet, and using high end components in a noisy car with no roof
is kinda pointless. I wanted the system to be completely hidden, so
the speakers are mounted behind the dash and rear firewall, and the
headunit pops up from the tranny tunnel whenever I want to listen to
tunes.
Headunit - I originally wanted to use a linear actuator, but those are pretty pricey. I tried a popup headlight motor from the junkyard, but it was pretty bulky, and would need to have limit switches made. So I went the simple route, and just made a lever that I can raise manually. A black bolt head is all that's visible, and its down low, about 1" in front of the drivers seat base, so its tough to see anyway. I also made a simple stand to support my Ipod when I've got it hooked up. Speakers - The speakers are low end Kenwoods, mounted on aluminum brackets. MDF baffles are the best way to mount speakers, but sound quality wasn't really a goal with this system, due to the noisy exhaust. The front and rear sound waves are kept separate using XTC baffles. Amp / Sub - The amp is a 5 channel Soundstream amp, mounted on hinged brackets above the sub. The sub is an 8" RE sub in a .5cuft ported box. I chose to make the box with an external PVC port for something different. The sub and battery are mounted on the upper shelf, and still leave plenty of room for groceries down below. |
